Text:

1 Corinthians 3:1-4 (KJV)
1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto
carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not
able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.
3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and
strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye
not carnal?
1 Corinthians 3:5-15 (KJV)
5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye
believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?
6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth;
but God that giveth the increase.
8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall
receive his own reward according to his own labour.
9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s
husbandry, ye are God’s building.
10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise
masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon.
But let every man take heed how he buildeth
thereupon.
11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is
Jesus Christ.
12 Now if any man build upon this foundation
gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
Notes For Verse 12
a [gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble …] Works are
compared to these materials — some become more pure in the fire and
others are completely burned up by fire.– Fire will try every man’s
works.
13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the
day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by
fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what
sort it is.
14 If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he
shall receive a reward.

15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he
himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
1 Corinthians 3:16-23 (KJV)
16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the
Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the
temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
Notes For Verse 17
a [defile] Greek: phtheiro (GSN-<G5351>), to corrupt, spoil, ruin,
waste, destroy. Translated “destroy “in this same verse; and “to corrupt”
(1Cor. 15:33; 2Cor. 7:2; 11:3; Rev. 19:2; Jude 1:10; Eph. 4:22). This
(1Cor. 3:17) is a solemn warning against sexual sin, alcoholic drinks,
tobacco, narcotics, etc. which destroy the body. See note, 2Cor. 7:1.
2 Corinthians 7:1 (KJV)
1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse
ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting
holiness in the fear of God.

18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise
in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.
19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written,
He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
20 And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are
vain.
21 Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours;
22 Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or
things present, or things to come; all are yours;
23 And ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.

Judgment of Believers’ Works

 1 Corinthians 3:11-15 (KJV)

  1. Subjects: believers (Gal. 6:8; Eph. 6:8;
    Col. 3:24; Rom. 14; 2Cor. 5:10)
    Galatians 6:8 (KJV)
8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he
that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
    Ephesians 6:8 (KJV)
8 Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he
receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.
    Colossians 3:24 (KJV)
24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the
reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
    Romans 14:1-23 (KJV)
1 Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful
    disputations.
2 For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak,
    eateth herbs.
3 Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him
which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.
4 Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant? to his own master he
standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make
    him stand.
5 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every
day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.
6 He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that
regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth,

eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to
the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.
7 For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.
8 For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we
die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s.
9 For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might
be Lord both of the dead and living.
10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought
thy brother? for we shall all stand before the
judgment seat of Christ.
11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,
and every tongue shall confess to God.
12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself
to God.
13 Let us not therefore judge one another any more:
but judge this rather, that no man put a
stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s
way. – what if I preached false doctrine, what if I drank a beer!!! No
way!!!
14 I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing
unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to
him it is unclean.
15 But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not
charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died.
16 Let not then your good be evil spoken of:
17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and
peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
18 For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and
approved of men.
19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for
peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

20 For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but
it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.
21 It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any
thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is
made weak.
22 Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that
condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth. – a nice car,
a golf game, a workout program.
23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of
faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
2 Corinthians 5:1-12 (KJV)
1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were
dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands,
eternal in the heavens.
2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our
house which is from heaven:
3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.
4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for
that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be
swallowed up of life. —Sleeping Bag Swallow illustration
5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also
hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.
6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at
home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body,
and to be present with the Lord.
9 Wherefore we labour,[ (philos) and <G5092> (time); to be fond of honor,
i.e. emulous (eager or earnest to do something) :- labour, strive, study.]
that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted
of him.

10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of
Christ; that every one may receive the things done in
his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be
good or bad.
11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we
persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are
made manifest in your consciences.
 phebomai (to be put in fear); alarm or fright :- be afraid, +
exceedingly, fear, terror.

  1. Time: between the rapture and the
    second coming (Luke 14:14)
    Luke 14:12-15 (KJV)
12 Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or
a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor
thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be
    made thee.
13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the
    blind: – half way house….
14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense
thee:$$$- for thou shalt be recompensed at the
    resurrection of the just.
15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he
said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in
the kingdom of God. – Jesus is the bread of life.

Some of you are going to get lots of
bread…others are going to get some bread.

  1. Place: in heaven (1Cor. 9:24-27; Rom.
    14; 2Cor. 5:10)
    1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (KJV)
24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the
prize? So run, that ye may obtain. –from <G2596> (kata) and
<G2983> (lambano); to take eagerly, i.e. seize, possess, etc. (literal or
figurative) :- apprehend, attain, come upon, comprehend,
    find, obtain, perceive, (over-) take.
25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is
temperate [to exercise self-restraint (in diet and chastity) :- can ([-not])
    contain, be temperate.
] in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible
    crown; but we an incorruptible.
26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that
    beateth the air:
27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into
subjection:[ to be a slave-driver, i.e. to enslave (figurative
subdue my own flesh) :- bring into subjection.] lest that by any
means, when I have preached to others, I myself should
    be a castaway.

herald (as a public crier), especially divine truth (the gospel) :-
preach (-er), proclaim, publish.

unapproved, i.e. rejected; by implication worthless (literal or moral) :-
castaway, rejected, reprobate.

  1. Basis: works, both good and bad (1Cor.
    3:11-15; 2Cor. 5:10; Rom. 14; Col. 3; Matt.
    16:27; Rom. 2:6; 2Tim. 4:14)
    Romans 2:6 (KJV)
6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

2 Timothy 4:14 (KJV)
14 Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord
reward him according to his works:

  1. Result: reward or Loss of reward, but
never the loss of one’s soul for any
    wrongdoings properly confessed and
    forgiven (1Cor. 3:11-15).

This judgment deals
with the believer as a
servant (Rom. 14; 2Cor. 5:10)
 Believers will be judged concerning

  1. Doctrines (Rom. 2:14-16; Rom. 14)

  2. Conduct to others (Mt. 18; Rom. 14)

  3. Carnal traits (Col. 3; Rom. 1-2; 8:1-13;
    14:1-23)

  4. Words (Mt. 12:32-37; Rom. 14)
    Matthew 12:32-37 (KJV)
32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be
forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall
not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.
[It is unforgivable if it is done maliciously and knowingly, as here and in
Heb. 6:4-9; 10:26-31; 1Tim. 1:13. ]

33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree
corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.
34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for
out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good
things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall
speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of
judgment.
37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy
words thou shalt be condemned.
Hebrews 13:17 (KJV)
17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they
watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it
with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
